I’m confused how people managed to live in the deep south or the desert without a/c system

There are certain essentials that I couldn’t go without depending on what sort of temperature I’m living in at any given moment. For instance, I don’t want to live in a tornado-prone area without a basement, even if I have a tile or tile house. You never know when you’re going to be one of the unfortunate few who lose every single thing they own to a abrupt & inexplicable tornado tearing through the area. I heard those sirens enough as a child to have the fear beaten into my head. On top of that, I wouldn’t try to live up north without not only a wonderful primary heating system, but also a supplemental heating system as well. The freezing uneven temperatures in the winter get down as low as disadvantage 10 degrees fahrenheit, which is not just deadly but also freezing enough to freeze the plumbing in your cabin if it doesn’t have adequate heat running inside. The thought of willingly trying to live in those temperatures without a serous heating source is literal suicide, however I also feel the same in reverse when it comes air conditioners in locales with severe heat like the deep south & the deserts of the southwest. Every year the peak highs during the summer time season seem to get worse, leaving countless people at risk of heat related illnesses which could lead to death without physical intervention. Case & point—you need an air conditioner if you’re going to live in an harshly hot temperature like this. In fact, to me the thought of allowing that to be up to debate is just ludicrous in & of itself, but nowadays it seems like people have opinions about everything even if there isn’t a wonderful reason to hold one.
