Should she buy a dehumidifier?

My friend recently invested in a dehumidifier for her home.

We live in an extremely hot and humid state.

In fact, it is the state that people think of when they think of a hot and humid climate and I think we are in the hottest and wettest part of that state! Anyway, my friend decided to invest in a dehumidifier because she felt that the humidity levels in her home were too high. I have heard that an air conditioner should be able to regulate the humidity levels within your home in addition to keeping it cool all by itself. I suggested that there might be something wrong with her air conditioner and that she might want to get that checked out before buying a dehumidifier. She didn’t want to do this. She said that if she called out an HVAC technician, she was afraid that she would end up spending a lot of money that she didn’t necessarily have at the moment. So, for now, she opted to buy a dehumidifier instead. However, after using it for a bit, she said that it wasn’t working the way she thought it would. I asked her how long it had been since she turned it on. She said it had been about 4 hours. Something told me that a dehumidifier takes longer than that to work properly! I looked it up for her and I found that a dehumidifier probably won’t accomplish any noticeable change in the humidity levels until about 12 hours in! I told her as much, and she decided to be patient.
