HVAC warranties need eyes on them

When I was a kid, I was the first one awake on Christmas morning.

That is if I really even slept.

Perhaps there was some dozing but I don’t think I’ve ever anticipated anything the way I did Christmas morning. Before dawn, I’d sneak downstairs and do something that I wasn’t supposed to do. I’d push the thermostat up a bit so the gas furnace would kick on and warm the house up. Dad was a stickler about making sure that he turned down the thermostat much lower while we slept in our warm beds. But like clockwork, the gas furnace running would always get my dad up on Christmas morning. Well, I would tear into my presents like there was no tomorrow. Of course, I never read a single direction or saved a single warranty. And unfortunately, that habit stayed with me into my adult life. But now that I have voided the warranty on the HVAC equipment that is only 7 years old, I’ll be reading every word of every warranty going forward. Yea, I made an egregious error with my heat pump that ended up costing me the rest of the warranty from the HVAC factory. Because I didn’t read the warranty, I didn’t know that me trying to work on it would void our protection. But it was clearly stated and there just wasn’t any disputing it. So not only did I have to write a check to HVAC professional who corrected the original problem and the damage I did, it cost me years of warranty as well. That is a tough and terribly expensive lesson to learn. Now, I’m going to have to be sure that I never miss an HVAC maintenance appointment again.
