I’m confused how people managed to live in the deep south or the desert without a/c

There are certain essentials that I couldn’t go without depending on what sort of climate I’m living in at any given moment.

  • For instance, I don’t want to live in a tornado-prone area without a basement, even if I have a cement or brick house.

You never know when you’re going to be one of the unlucky few who lose every single thing they own to a sudden and inexplicable tornado tearing through the area. I heard those sirens enough as a child to have the fear beaten into my head. On top of that, I wouldn’t try to live up north without not only a good primary heating system, but also a supplemental heating system as well. The cold temperatures in the winter get down as low as negative 10 degrees fahrenheit, which is not just deadly but also cold enough to freeze the plumbing in your house if it doesn’t have sufficient heat running inside. The thought of willingly trying to live in those climates without a serous heating source is literal suicide, but I also feel the same in reverse when it comes air conditioners in places with severe heat like the deep south and the deserts of the southwest. Every year the peak highs during the summer season seem to get worse, leaving countless people at risk of heat related illnesses which could lead to death without physical intervention. Case and point—you need an air conditioner if you’re going to live in an extremely hot climate like this. In fact, to me the thought of allowing that to be up to debate is just ludicrous in and of itself, but nowadays it seems like people have opinions about everything even if there isn’t a good reason to hold one.
